
Between Homes
Between Homes is a presentation on Japan's traditional wooden architecture, held Saturday, August 1, 2026 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. It takes place in the Inamori Pavilion at the Japanese Friendship Garden and Museum in Balboa Park, San Diego. Tickets are $10 for garden members and $25 for non-members, with garden admission included.
The Talk
The presentation covers kominka farmhouses, kura storehouses, temples, shrines, gates, and other historic structures. It examines the carpentry and joinery behind them, along with preservation, faithful reconstruction, adaptive reuse, and the cultural knowledge held in traditional buildings and materials. The program also looks at the role of education and international collaboration in preserving Japan's architectural heritage.
Tickets
The class is non-refundable within seven days of the event. Admission to the garden is part of the ticket.
