Katazome Print workshop
The Katazome Print Workshop runs Saturday, August 1, 2026 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the Japanese Friendship Garden and Museum in Balboa Park, San Diego. Tickets run $60 to $75, and garden admission is required.
The Workshop
Katazome is a Japanese stencil-dyeing technique. In this hands-on session, you paint with Japanese pigment watercolor called Gansai onto premium washi postcards from Kyukyodo, a long-established Kyoto paper shop. Using delicate stencil patterns carved by traditional craftsmen, you create one to three postcard-sized works.
What You Take Home
After the workshop, you keep your finished postcards and a mini hanging scroll.
The class suits San Diego residents who want a short, materials-included introduction to a traditional Japanese printmaking craft.
